4:3(1.33/1) Letter Box Television
Noted On DVD as: Standard or Full Frame
Letter box is the original size of TV. If you have one this size a lot will generally get chopped off, some designers make there shows to fit this size of television and add extra non essential details for fullscreen.
~16:9(~1.85:1) Widescreen Television
Noted On DVD as: Fullscreen
This aspect ratio is designed for the human eyes. It is the aspect ratio that you will see full and clear. Unlike 21:9, you will be able to see all the details without the weak peripheral vision. However some films either chop off parts to make this size or give you the black bar of death.
~21:9(2.31:1) Widescreen Television
Noted On DVD as: Widescreen
This is the largest aspect ratio, in this you not only use your full vision, you also use your peripheral vision which is very weak in humans. If your TV is big enough this allows producers to show you things like you would see in the real world(and scare you to death), of course you can cheat this by looking to the sides.
I've already wrote about a similar topic in another article, DVD are capable of HD but not a commercial DVD. If you want higher than 480P get a blu-ray!
